(I hit a grading wall and there went my blogging rhythm this week! Quick news that made me feel very honored: Say This, NOT That received its first peer-reviewed journal nod from The National Academic Advising Association: “…should be required reading for first year seminars and campus orientation classes.” Yay!!!!! Here is the full review and if your campus would like an exam copy, message me at chattyprof@gmail.com and I’ll send word to my publisher. Now, on to today’s post: The NACADA review discusses the increasing disconnect between students and campus professionals. Well, a student wrote to me with a huge disconnect, albeit...

Part 2: “Some Professors Suck!” – Being New and Only Using The Book

Posted by on Oct 26, 2012 in General | 2 comments

I’ll dive in and continue our discussion that we started the other day by the parent and the student about a) why some professors seemingly refuse to help; and b) why some professors suck sometimes. I received some great comments on that post and here are some comments from Twitter: From @Joeymom: As a prof, I agree. Some profs suck at teaching. Many are trained in their field, but have zero training in education. From @PopoagieForever: This is sometimes true and sometimes a sign of a lazy or unqualified student. From @CatalyzedLeader: That’s because 95% of doctoral programs involve no TEACHER TRAINING! I sought it out to make sure I was educated. I love it,...

“Some Professors Suck at Teaching!”: A Parent and Student Voice Concerns

Posted by on Oct 24, 2012 in Communicating with Professors, General, General College Success/Responses to Other College Entities | 19 comments

(We’re back to college success! There are some frustrated folks out there. As a recent guest on Women’s Talk Radio, bunches of students called in about negative experiences with profs–and it was only the first week of school! Here are two comments I recently received. When I read them, I had two thoughts: a) We don’t always help as much we should; and b) Some of us suck sometimes. All faculty were students and we experienced great and not-so-great profs. I hardly have all the answers, but I’m willing to share what I know and open up the conversation. I also admit that after a year of being on leave, I feel like I suck a little, myself, this...

Another High School Student Writes: “I Read Last Week’s Post. I Could Really Relate.”

Posted by on Oct 22, 2012 in General, General College Success/Responses to Other College Entities | 9 comments

(We interrupt my scheduled program for this week–but only for a day or two–to address yet another student who has a similar issue to last week’s high school student. Abundant thanks to all of you who commented on that post. Can I call on you again for your wisdom? Up next on the blog, many students are struggling now that college is really underway. I’m getting notes like crazy! I’ll talk about two write-in comments regarding professors who seemingly refuse to help. Look for it! One other programming note: I’ll be the guest on Jodi Okun’s #CollegeCash this Thursday at 7 p.m. Join in an important discussion about communication,...

What Would You Say to a High School Student Who Feels Lost and Controlled by Family?

Posted by on Oct 16, 2012 in General, General College Success/Responses to Other College Entities, Interpersonal Communication | 30 comments

(I’m covering a number of write-in questions, so stay tuned! I bet many of us can relate to this one! Can we provide some support to this student who feels uncertainty and family pressure? Let’s take a look…) “I’m in high school and I don’t have long until I graduate. I am very unsure of what to do when I get out. I planned to go to community college and then attend a university. My family doesn’t agree with that decision (to attend a community college). In my family, the elders decide what career path provides a good income. Now I am confused. I feel like I’ve drifted along with what I have to do but I’ve never...
