(Hi, all… I know I said I’d be taking the week off, but I couldn’t resist a sneak-in post to recap some things that took me by surprise this week. Yes, I did take a small mom-cation for a couple of days. But here were some other bright spots in my world that I couldn’t wait to share with you… I rarely do the listing posts, but thought it might be a nice vacation-y thing to do. So, have fun! See you next week for regularly scheduled programming.) Staying off my laptop is nearly an impossible feat for me, particularly when I take it on vacation for movies. Not to mention, I’m waking up between 5-6 a.m. these days thanks to this habit...

A Sneak Peek Inside Say This, NOT That to Your Professor

Posted by on Apr 23, 2012 in Communicating with Professors, General | 1 comment

(I finished my last post really late at night on Friday, and I don’t usually blog on Mondays, but I did promise a sneak peek into the book. Amazon doesn’t have these pages in their Look Inside, but I do! The book is formatted into 36 very short chapters with the same headers throughout, which is explained below. I mentioned in this post that I had a conversation with a student, one that really hit me, and that was the reason why I started the list. The list started the book. So, my wonderful blog audience… here is the introduction to Say This, NOT That to Your Professor. Tomorrow, Tuesday, we are really back to the usual blog material! Here’s the...

As promised, the final installment (Catch up on Parts 1, 2, and 3)! Thank you for staying with me through the week and for the incredibly kind and supportive words about my journey. They mean more than you can imagine. This post is a little late. With all the excitement going on this week, it slipped my mind that I’d actually be away today. I’m with eight of my colleagues for a curriculum retreat this weekend. But I’m determined to finish the story, so here goes…   Please don’t hate me for quoting Oprah Winfrey, but she has a saying that has been true for me over and over and over again: “When you find your authentic self, the...

My Book’s Journey, Part 3: Hiding Behind Others’ Projects… And Writing My Way Out

Posted by on Apr 19, 2012 in General | 5 comments

Day 3 of the mini-series! So, when we last left, I found a new career as a professor, but a lost publishing deal. I made the conscious decision that I was just not meant to write for myself. I’ll pick up where that sentiment left off. If you’re just coming on board, catch up with Part 1 and Part 2.   As is expected with chronologies like this, I don’t want you to think I totally gave up on my writing dream: I absolutely did try several times to get a freelance career going and to work on some fiction projects over the years. In fact, in the 1990s, I wrote about single life (after I got married for my 1.2 seconds, of course–not fiction,...

My Book’s Journey, Part 2: A Loss, a Find, and a Dream Dashed… Again

Posted by on Apr 18, 2012 in General | 7 comments

Welcome back! Day 2… When we last left, I had gotten married, and my father was carrying a secret. Catch up on Part 1 here. And the story continues!   Once I got married, I figured that since my husband had a pretty good career and I had no career just yet, I should go back to school. My husband supported this goal and I immediately signed up to return to community college full-time. This was my second time back in school and since I had support from someone else (as opposed to depending on my irresponsible single self), I believed I’d be sticking around for a while. What did I do? I marched right into the college newspaper office and joined the team....
